Sin ningún lugar a dudas, Roberto Achával es un cantor importante en la historia del tango y el más notorio entre los bahienses.
Lo conocí allá por el año 1990, me lo presentó ese cantorazo que fue el querido “gordo” Jorge Valdez en la pizzería Kentucky de Godoy Cruz y Santa Fe, pleno Barrio de Palermo. Achával me resultó un tipo simpático, bonachón y muy elegante.
Después nos cruzamos en muchas oportunidades en la noche porteña y en la casa de Juanca Tavera, también en la del recordado guionista de “Grandes valores del tango” y autor del tangazo “Y me hice viejo”, Pascual Tudino.
El flaco Alberto Morán en una oportunidad, refiriéndose a Cacho -como todos llamaban a Achával- me dijo textualmente: “Es un gran cantor… y tiene casi mi misma pinta”.
Como versa ese gran éxito que interpretara en la cortina de la icónica telenovela “Malevo”: Nació en un barrio con malvón y luna por donde el hambre suele hacer gambetas y desde pibe fue poniendo el hombro….
Oscar Aníbal vio la luz por primera vez en Ingeniero White, partido de Bahía Blanca, el 11 de noviembre de 1930, fueron sus padres Alejandro Crudeli y Josefa Scalesi que vivían en la casa de la calle José Sisco 3350.
Desde pibe tuvo dos aficiones, darle a la de “cuero” y la música.
Realizó los estudios primarios en la escuela N° 13 de la localidad portuaria y el secundario en el Comercial de Bahía Blanca.
Estudió violín con su tío Alibeo Crudeli y bandoneón con Luis Bonnat, Aníbal Vitali y Antonio Ríos.
Se casó con su novia de toda la vida, “la negra” Juana Dodero, con quien tuvo dos hijos, Mirta y Leonel.
Como violinista integró las orquestas de Aníbal Troncoso y la de “Palito” Bonnat (magnífico bandoneonista que pasara por las orquestas de Osmar Maderna, Orlando Goñi, Osvaldo Pugliese, Mariano Mores y Alfredo Gobbi, entre otras).
Debuta casualmente como cantor en la orquesta de Bonnat ante la ausencia de uno de los vocalistas y allí comienza su sólida carrera como intérprete, usando los seudónimos de Carlos Millán y Alberto Randal.
En el año 1967 obtiene el segundo puesto como cantor solista en el Festival de Tango de La Falda, Córdoba, y ese fue su primer paso para consagrarse definitivamente.
Participa luego en el concurso organizado por el programa de televisión Grandes valores del tango, que transmitía Canal 9 de Buenos Aires, y es contratado como artista exclusivo del mencionado medio llamándose artísticamente Roberto Achával ya por el resto de su carrera.
Su magnífica interpretación del tango “Te llaman Malevo” (música de Aníbal Troilo y letra de Homero Expósito) acompañado por la orquesta dirigida por Santos Lipesker, fue la cortina musical de la novela “Malevo”, emitida en el año 1972 con récord de audiencia, protagonizada por Rodolfo Bebán y Gabriela Gilli (la rubia linda, pretendida por muchos del malevaje y los de clase alta, que se peleaban por ella). Actuaron también Nora Massi (la negra, amiga de nadie, que era la machona, cafishia de los barrios bajos que frecuentaba los bares nocturnos de hombres), Oscar Ferrigno (el rival del malevo, que también pretendía a la rubia linda y que tuvo varios enfrentamientos con el malevo), Rolando Chaves, Rey Charol (el negro), Ignacio Quirós, Germán Krauss, Romualdo Quiroga, Beatriz Díaz Quiroga (Laura) y Francisco Cocuzza (que interpretaba a Carrara un boxeador veterano y perdedor).
La tira duró 3 temporadas, su autor fue el prolífico Abel Santa Cruz.
Achával trabajó en los principales reductos tangueros: El Viejo Almacén, Caño 14, El Bulín de la Calle Ayacucho, Malena al Sur, Taconeando, entre otros, y realizó giras por Estados Unidos, Brasil, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile y Uruguay.
Fue vocalista de las orquestas de Osvaldo Piro y Omar Valente y canto ocasionalmente con Ernesto Baffa y Osvaldo Berlingieri, Osvaldo Tarantino, Roberto Pansera y el pianista uruguayo Jesús Francisco “Panchito” Nolé.
También fue acompañado musicalmente por Lucio Demare en la tanguería Malena al Sur que fundó el pianista en el pasaje Giuffra en el barrio porteño de San Telmo.
Fue el último cantor de la orquesta de Aníbal Troilo y cantó junto a él la noche del 17 de mayo de 1975 en el teatro Odeón horas antes de la muerte del bandoneón mayor de Buenos Aires.
Roberto Achával falleció en esa misma ciudad, el 27 de junio de 1996.
Dejo versiones maravillosas de la milonga de Alberto Mastra “Asi fui yo”, de los tangos “Desencuentro” (Cátulo Castillo y Aníbal Troilo), “Barrio de tango” (Homero Manzi y Aníbal Troilo), “A Homero” (Cátulo Castillo y Aníbal Troilo) con la orquesta de Osvaldo Piro, “Nobleza de arrabal” (Homero Manzi y Francisco Canaro) con el cuarteto dirigido por el bandoneonista Ernesto Baffa, “Cosas olvidadas” (José María Contursi y Antonio Rodio) con la orquesta de Omar Valente y la canción compuesta por Sandro con letra de Oscar Anderle “Fácil de Olvidar”, acompañado por la orquesta de Canal 9 dirigida por el pianista Osvaldo Tarantino.
Las vueltas de la vida hicieron que mediante el Ciclo cultural Bahia No Olvida, que fundé hace 10 años, se lograra repatriar los restos del cantor a 17 años de su fallecimiento; desde el 11 de noviembre de 2013 descansa en tierra bahiense.
