Quienes conocieron a Miguel Montero lo describían como una persona estupenda, humilde, solidario, agradable, educado, siempre sonriente, buen compañero y excelente amigo.
Poseía una voz potente, dramática, perfecta afinación y dicción, y un fraseo único que lo convirtieron en ídolo popular.
Había nacido en el “jardín de la república”, San Miguel de Tucumán, el domingo 9 de julio de 1922, pero a los dos años se trasladó con su familia a la provincia de Córdoba.
En 1930 se radican en Buenos Aires, más precisamente en el barrio de Saavedra.
De pibe lo apasionaban el tango y el fútbol, mientras aprendía el oficio de su padre, pintor, con el que se ganó la diaria durante varios años.
A los 16 años debuta como cantor en el corazón del barrio de Floresta (Club All Boys) y al poco tiempo actuó en Radio Del Pueblo acompañado por las guitarras de José Di Napoli y los hermanos Legarreta.
Pasó por las orquesta barriales de Eliseo Minotti y la de Miguel Brunetti, hasta que en el año 1941 se incorpora a la orquesta del Bandoneonista, director y compositor, Pedro Maffia
Su amigo de toda la vida, el recordado poeta, compositor y escritor Roberto Cassinelli, lo bautiza “El Negro de Oro”.
Al poco tiempo se incorporó a la orquesta de Juan Carlos Cobián, cuando el notable pianista y compositor pigüense volvió de su fantástica incursión por Estados Unidos
A comienzos del año 1949 el pianista Juan Carlos Howard lo contrata como cantor y luego se lo recomienda al pianista, director y compositor Francisco Lomuto y éste lo integra a su formación en reemplazo de Carlos Galarce. Debuta junto al otro cantor de la orquesta, Alberto Rivera, en radio Belgrano y graba su primer disco en la Víctor: “Muñequita”, que tiene música de Lomuto y letra del poeta y guitarrista Adolfo Herschel. Permaneció en la orquesta hasta la muerte de Lomuto, ocurrida el 23 de diciembre de 1950. Entonces, ingresa a la orquesta del violinista Roberto Dimas y después a la del bandoneonista, director y compositor Carlos Demaría, con quien graba para el sello discográfico Pampa el tema de Enrique Santos Discépolo “Esta noche me emborracho”.
El 16 de julio de 1954 en el Club Atlético Huracán, debutó en la orquesta de Osvaldo Pugliese, a instancias del bandoneonista Mario Demarco, reemplazando a Jorge Vidal; con la orquesta del mítico maestro de Villa Crespo grabó dieciséis temas como solista y cuatro en dúo con Jorge Maciel.
De Pugliese se desvincula el 6 de agosto de 1959 iniciando su carrera como solista.
Debutó en Radio Splendid con su propia orquesta dirigida por José Libertella. Después lo hizo con el acompañamiento de Eduardo Corti, Armando Cupo, Aquiles Roggero, Juan José Paz y Ángel Domínguez.
Realizó giras por todo nuestro país (presentándose en varias oportunidades en Bahía Blanca) y por el exterior: Centroamérica, Venezuela (donde graba un larga duración), Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Colombia y Estados Unidos.
Grabó dos temas con la orquesta de Miguel Caló (1966) y otros dos con la de Mariano Mores (1961 y 1969).
En 1971 grabó dos discos de larga duración con acompañamiento de las guitarras de Roberto Grela, Carlos Peralta, Domingo Láinez, Juan Calos Gorrias y en guitarrón Ernesto Baez, y, en 1973, un larga duración titulado “Los cosos de Buenos Aires” que contenía 12 temas con la orquesta de Horacio Salgán.
Su última grabación fue acompañado por la orquesta de Pascual Mamone para el sello Odeón, 12 versiones en 1974.
Tiene versiones que son verdaderas joyas de la música ciudadana como “Antiguo reloj de cobre” de Eduardo Marvezzi, “Acquaforte” que tiene música del guitarrista Horacio Pettorossi y letra del cantor, letrista, compositor y actor bahiense Juan Carlos Marambio Catán, “Dicha pasada” de Guillermo Barbieri, “Por qué la quise tanto” de Mariano Mores y Rodolfo Taboada, “Los Despojos” de Horacio Sanguinetti y José Dames, “Me quedé mirándola” de Vicente Spina y Roberto Miró, “Callejón” de Roberto Grela y Héctor Marcó.
Fue compositor de los tangos “Carbonilla” con José Libertella y Aldo Queirolo, “Qué diablos pasa” con letra de Julio Fontana, “Pa’ la muchachada” que grabara con Pugliese, “La noche tiene ojos negros”, “Celos por quererte” con Ángel Domínguez y la milonga “No te hagás el pituquito”, con Reinaldo Yiso.
Miguel Montero falleció a los cincuenta y tres años de un infarto el viernes 29 de agosto de 1975, mientras desayunaba en la cama. Había regresado el día anterior de su provincia natal,y al día siguiente tenía que actuar en un baile del Club Atlanta .
