El Bahiense Augusto Pedro Berto… Leyenda Indiscutible del Tango
El bandoneonista, compositor y director Augusto Pedro Berto fue sin lugar a dudas una de las personalidades más importantes en los comienzos del tango y tiene un sitial de privilegio en la historia de nuestra música nacional y popular.
Nació en Bahía Blanca el lunes 4 de febrero de 1889. A los cinco años se radicó con su familia en el tanguero barrio de Villa Crespo, Buenos Aires.
Aprendió solo y de oído a tocar el mandolín y la guitarra, mientras pintaba y decoraba paredes, ya que se ganaba la vida como pintor de brocha gorda, actividad que desarrolló hasta que pudo dedicarse de lleno al tango. En su actividad como pintor, quiso el azar que trabajara conjuntamente con Francisco Canaro en la obra de remodelación del Congreso Nacional, en los tiempos de la presidencia de Manuel Quintana. Luego, tanto Berto como Pirincho, serían pioneros en la música típica.
Alternaba su faena de pintor con la práctica de la masonería, el pan espiritual que nunca abandonaría, quedando ligado a esa filosofía en su testamento y en el diccionario de Alcibíades Lappas.
En 1903 empezó a estudiar violín, llegando a integrar al año siguiente la Orquesta del Centro Coral y Musical Defensores de Villa Crespo. En 1905 se inició en el arte del bandoneón con José Piazza “Pepín”, instrumento que lo entusiasmó oyendo ejecutar a los primeros bandoneonistas: Santa Cruz, Pablo Romero, Sebastián Ramos Mejía. Una vez, al ser preguntado acerca de quién era Ramos Mejía, si era un aristócrata -por el apellido- contestó: “No, era un negro que trabajaba de cuarteador en el tranvía”.
Berto sostenía que el tango había nacido mucho antes de ser conocido en el barrio de La Boca: “…el tango se bailó en las baterías de Retiro. Lo bailaba el bajo pueblo, la chinada, con un compás que no se ha vuelto a usar después (…) Enseguida lo llevaron al corazón de la ciudad y las primeras reuniones se hicieron en la calle Sarmiento frente a la cortada Carabelas. Bastante tiempo después, allá por 1904 se lo llevó a las Romerías de Palermo”.
Debido a su enorme contextura física sus amigos lo llamaron siempre “el oso”.
Sobre el primer bandoneón cuenta: “Lo importó del viejo mundo Don Tomás, (‘El Inglés’, por Tomás Moore), un personaje extraordinariamente simpático. Y el primer bandoneonista que yo conocí fue José Scott, un matarife que lo ejecutaba bastante bien. El primer café que tuvo bandoneón estable en su tablado fue ‘La Morocha’ ubicado en el límite de los barrios de Villa Crespo y Almagro”.
En aquel café actuó Berto con la orquesta de su maestro de bandoneón, José Piazza, quien también inició en el instrumento a Pedro Maffia. Continuó presentándose en los nocturnos cafetines de Montserrat, diversos piringundines de San Telmo y en los cafés con camareras de La Boca; hasta que enfiló para el centro.
Con el tiempo, el bahiense se hizo autodidacta y confeccionó sus propios ejercicios sobre la base de la teoría musical que ya conocía. Así nació su método de bandoneón, el que luego habría de ser cuna de tantos músicos.
Alrededor del año 1906, se encontró trabajando en la ciudad de San Martín -pueblito en aquel entonces, que está ubicado en el límite noroeste con Buenos Aires- en La Milonga de Don Juan y Doña Virginia. Aquel año formó cuarteto con “El Viejo Eduardo” en violín, Durand en flauta y Andrade en guitarra. Posteriormente, integró formación con Domingo Salerno en guitarra y Antonio Scatasso en mandolín.
En 1908, con Francisco Canaro al violín, Salerno en guitarra y José Fuster (flauta); cuarteto con el que actuaba en el “Café de los Loros” de Corrientes 4030, bautizado con ese nombre porque era frecuentado por el personal de la Compañía de Tranvías Lacroze, que tenía un uniforme verde. También llevó su música al café “Venturita” de Triunvirato (hoy Corrientes) y Serrano.
Es por esa época que nace su primer tango: “La payanca”. “La improvisé una noche en que los bailarines habían agotado el repertorio. Después de setenta u ochenta piezas seguidas había que improvisar”.
Cuenta el Dr. Eduardo Giorlandini que Berto, a sus 17 años, lo tituló así porque de pibe había escuchado la palabra, que los chicos usaban antes, en Bahía Blanca, cuando se trataba de enlazar una gallina, aunque pialar de payanca era y es arrojar el lazo a las patas del animal, en el ámbito campero y en relación con los animales propios del campo argentino, tal como lo explica con más detalle Tito Saubidet.
En 1913 fundó el “Quinteto Augusto” grabando para el sello “Atlanta”, de la firma Améndola y Cía.: él tocando bandoneón, “el francés” Doutry al violín, Luis Teisseire en flauta, Domingo Salerno en guitarra y José Martínez en piano, quien no actuaba en las grabaciones (aunque, en las etiquetas, la formación figuraba como quinteto). La serie comienza con el tango de José Martínez, “La torcacita” y la polca “La cocota” de Berto. “Augusto” fue uno de los quintetos de mayor renombre y aptitudes de la época.
En 1915 se presentó en el café “La Oración” de Corrientes 1110 con Peregrino Paulos y Julio Doutry en violines, Luis Teisseire en flauta y José Sassone en piano, reemplazado luego por Juan Rodríguez y más tarde por Francisco Pracánico. En ese año, dio a conocer oficialmente su tango “La payanca”.
Resultaría muy extenso enumerar en su totalidad la carrera de este gran músico, sintéticamente resumimos sus actuaciones más importantes. Inaugura el “Café Parque”, de Lavalle y Talcahuano, y el cabaret “Montmartre”; fue la primer orquesta que hizo un baile de carnaval dentro del Teatro Nacional -hasta entonces sólo lo hacían las bandas-, también en los teatros “Coliseo” y “Politeama”. Más tarde, las recordadas actuaciones en el “Bar Domínguez” de la calle Corrientes, sus registros discográficos para las empresas Victor y Columbia y, en 1918, su paso por el “Bar Central” de la Avenida de Mayo y Piedras con un cuarteto integrado por Peregrino Paulos y Horacio Gomila en violines y Domingo Fortunato al piano.
En 1920 ameniza el séptimo baile del Internado para el cual compone su tango “El séptimo”. Después retorna al sello Victor y en 1924 hace su última placa para el sello Ideal con su tango “Papá en puerta” y en el acople, “Bichito” de Marini. Ese mismo año se le confía la dirección de la orquesta del Teatro Ópera y cuenta con el cantor también bahiense Juan Carlos Marambio Catán, quien estrena su tango “Perjura”.
Actuó en los inicios de nuestra radiofonía con su cuarteto, la orquesta y con otras formaciones. Berto actuó para diversas emisoras en los años treinta, como Argentina y Prieto. En ésta radio, tuvo como vocalista a Ángel Vargas, en 1938 y también a Alberto Castillo.
El recordado pianista, autor, compositor, investigador, historiador, maestro de tango Mario Valdez, en su artículo titulado “AUGUSTO PEDRO BERTO, Figura innegable del tango” afirma que Berto fue mucho más que un bandoneonista destacado del tango: “fue profesor de bandoneón y gran didacta, siendo el primero en publicar en Buenos Aires un método de bandoneón”.
En 1925 viaja a Brasil, según Mario Valdez, como acompañante musical de una gira deportiva patrocinada por el Club Atlético Boca Juniors. Seguidamente, emprendió con Angelina Pagano una tournée por el interior y Brasil nuevamente. En 1926, realiza un extenso y afortunado recorrido por América con la compañía teatral de Camila Quiroga que termina en Nueva York, donde se queda su violinista Remo Bolognini triunfando rotundamente. Al respecto nos dice: “…una gran experiencia fue sin duda la gira que hice con mi orquesta acompañando a la compañía de Camila Quiroga. Fue larguísima. Varios años de viaje. Todo el Pacífico, todo Centro América, Antillas, Cuba, México, Norteamérica y España”. En Nueva York actuó acompañado por el eximio violinista Remo Bolognini, en el Manhattan Opera House.
Al llegar a México, en esa gira, se impregna de la melodía de un éxito local, “¿Dónde estás Corazón?”, que con la autorización de su autor, Luis Martínez Serrano, arregla en tango y la trae a Buenos Aires incluyéndola todos los intérpretes de la canción popular a sus respectivos repertorios, incluso Carlos Gardel que la cantó en Europa.
Oscar Zucchi caracteriza a Augusto P. Berto como una “figura patriarcal del tango, fueyero de la época heroica” y destaca que cuando se habla de los bandoneonistas destacados del período en que el bandoneón pasó a ser el instrumento más representativo de los conjuntos dedicados a la ejecución del género típico, a Berto se lo margina injustamente, “su aporte a la definitiva adopción e imposición del mismo, y por ende del tango en los distintos ambientes y estratos sociales ha sido valioso y decisivo”.
Zucchi compara a Berto con próceres del tango como Vicente Greco, Juan Maglio, Genaro Espósito, Arturo Bernstein, Eduardo Arolas, Arturo Severino y Vicente Loduca, que transitaron el derrotero marcado por ese antecesor fundamental que fue Domingo Santa Cruz.
No debemos olvidar el destacado papel de Berto como gremialista, llegando a desempeñar la presidencia de la Sociedad de Autores y Compositores (SADAIC).
En el otoño de 1953 se detuvo su corazón. Oscar Zucchi expresó:
Desaparecía un hombre que como Canaro, como Firpo, como Maglio no pueden tener reposición. Parafraseando al poeta: “vacíos imposibles de llenar”. Fue además, un señor en todo sentido, generoso, honesto y querido en el ambiente. Entre los muchos tangos que se hicieron en su honor, sólo uno como muestra, “Quejas de bandoneón”, de Juan de Dios Filiberto, cuya partitura reza: “dedicado a mi amigo Augusto Berto”.
